Founder Hyeokgeose

The founder was from the Park clan. His posthumous name was Hyeokgeose. He rose to the throne in the fifth year of Wufeng during the reign of Emperor Xiaoxuan of the early Han (it is also said on the fifteenth day of the first month) and assumed the title Geoseogan. At the time he was 13 years old. His country was called Seonabeol.
Previously, remnant people from Joseon [Gojoseon] were divided between six villages in the Geosan valley. The first village was called Alcheon Yangsan, the second was called Dolsan Goheo, the third was called Jasan Jinji, (also called Ganjin), the fourth was called Musan Daesu, the fifth was called Gimsan Gari, and the sixth was called Myeonghwalsan Goya. These were the six parts of Jinhan. The chief of Goheo village, Sobeolgong, looked toward the foothills of Mt. Yang, and there in a forest near the well of Najeong, there was a horse. The horse neighed [to him], and so he went to it and watched it. Suddenly, he could no longer see the horse, and there was a large egg there. He cracked it, and a baby boy came out. Therefore [Sobeolgong] took in the child and raised it. By the time he was ten years of age, he was astute and scholarly, and the men of the six divisions, because of his miraculous birth, esteemed him, and he was established as their lord. The people of Jin [Jinhan] called gourds "bak," and as the great egg originally looked like a gourd, bak became his surname, and he was Geoseogan, king of Jin (it is also said that this was a title for a person of rank).

Namhae Chachaung

Namhae Chachaung took the throne (Chachaung, also called Jachung, was said by Kim Daemun to be a word for a shaman. People, to shamanist things, demons, and gods, still sacrifice and worship, and they still revere them. Consequently, the title of respect for elders became Jachung). He was the legal child of Hyeokgeose. His figure was tall and large, and his character exceedingly kind, and he had much wisdom. His mother was lady Aryeong, and his wife was lady Unje (it is also said she was lady Aru). He succeeded his father and announced the first year.
The Analects say, "When a man's ruler accedes to power, one year should pass before declaring the first year." This law was declared in the Spring and Autumn Period. This previous king praised the principles in the written work of others. The Instructions of Yi [in the Classic of History] say, "When King Tang of Shang had already passed, the first year of Tai Jia began." The Zheng Lang says, "When King Tang of Shang had already died, that year he took the throne, and it was the first year of Tai Jia." Also the Mencius says, "When Tang died, Tai Ding was not yet established. Wai Bing was two years. Zhong Ren was four years." Therefore I doubt the if the book of history is not missing some bamboo strips, and that the Zheng Lang's explanation is in error. It is also said, in olden times, when a man's ruler takes the throne, one month should pass before declaring the first year. It also says one year should pass. On the one month side, when Tang of Shang passed, it was the first year of Tai Jia. Mencius relays that Tai Ding was not yet established. Because Tai Ding was not yet established, then he died. Wai Bing was two years and Zhong Ren was four years, and all were Tai Ding's children and the two older brothers of Tai Jia, or they lived for two years, or they lived for for years, and died. Tai Jia, as a result, succeeded Tang. The Records of the Grand Historian say that Zhong Ren and Wai Bing were two lords, this is an error. Because in the past we followed that after the previous ruler's year ended, succession would occur and the new year announced. Therefore, from now on follow can ask obtain the people of Shang's rites.
First year, autumn, seventh month. Soldiers from Lelang came, surrounded Gin castle, and there were many casualties. The king called his attendants and said, "The saint has left the country, and his orphan has been chosen by the country's people: unreality dwells in rank. There is danger and fear as if fording a river. Now the surrounding countries have come and invaded, and it is because of this orphan's lack of virtue: how could it be otherwise?"
Then his attendants said, "The brigands have taken advantage of our period of mourning, and in impropriety soldiers have come. Heaven must not provide divine protection, their reverence is insufficient." Then the brigands suddenly retreated and went home.
Third year, spring, first month. An altar to the founder was built. Winter, tenth month, first day of the month. There was a solar eclipse.

Seventh year, autumn, seventh month. Talhae was made Chancellor. He was entrusted with the military and matters of the country's administration.
Eighth year, spring and summer. There was a drought.

15th year. There was a drought at the capital. Autumn, seventh month. There were locusts. The people starved. The king made use of the granaries and saved them. Lelang saw that the country's interior was empty and came to attack Gin castle. It was very dire. At night, there was a comet, and it fell in the brigand's camp. The men were all afraid of this and retreated. At a village in the headwaters of the Al river, they made 20 stone piles and then departed. 1,000 troops of the six districts pursued them, and departed from Mt. Toham and went east to the Al river. They saw the stone piles and knew what happened with the brigands, and so they stopped.
16th year, spring, second month. The people of Bukmyeong [Northern Myeong] cultivated rice fields. The king of Ye's stamp was presented.

Yuri Isageum

Yuri Isageum was the oldest child of Namhae. Hi mother was lady Unje. His wife was Ilji, the daughter of the Galmunwang . It is also said that her surname was Park, and that she was the daughter of Heoruwang [or King Heoru — I am unsure whether this is a proper name or a title like Galmunwang]. Originally when Namhae was buried, Yuri was supposed to succeed him, but the Chancellor Talhae originally had virtue and prestige, so [Yuri] was going to recommend that he take up this rank [of king]. Then Talhae said, "The illustrious and divine rank of king [usually emperor when this word refers to China] cannot endure a mediocre man. I have heard that sages have many teeth. Let us try thrice biting into a rice cake." Yuri had more teeth, so the attendants all offered to have him succeed. He was titled "Isageum," which was passed down from olden times.
Kim Daemun said, "Isageum is from a dialect. It designated teeth. Formerly, when Namehae was about to die, he said to his son Yuri and his son-in-law Talhae, "After I die, You, with the two surnames Park and Seok, by your seniority, succeed to the throne." After this, the Kim surname also became popular. The three surnames, because of the appearance of his teeth, became those that succeeded to the throne. Therefore the title is called "Isageum."

Fifth year, winter, 11th month. The king traveled around the interior of the country, and saw an old man. When he was starved and cold and about to die, the king said, "I, towards those of mean status, dwell above them. If I cannot nourish the people, and send old and young to these extremes, it is my sin." Then he took off his clothing and covered the old man, and gave food to him and fed him, and then ordered his ministers in that place to make inquiry of the widowers and the desperate, of the old and the sick who could not live on their own, and then he provided nourishment for them. Thereby, the people in the surrounding countries heard this and came in droves, and this year the people celebrated good health, and began the Jedusol song. This was the beginning of this music.
Ninth year, spring. The names of the six districts were amended. Also, surnames were awarded. The Yangsan district became the Ryang district, with the surname Lee. The Goheo district became the Saryang district, with the surname Choi. The Daesu district became the Jeomryang disctrict. It is said that the Moryang took the surname Son. The Ganjin district became the Bonpi district, with the surname Jung. The Gari district became the Hangi district, with the surname Bae. The Myeonghwal district became the Seupbi district, with the surname Seol. Also they established 17 ranks of official. The first was Ibeolsan. The second was Icheoksan. The third was Sosan [pronunciation uncertain]. Fourth was Pajinsan. Fifth was Daeasan. Sixth was Asan. Seventh was Ilgilsan. Eighth was Sasan. Ninth was Geupisan. Tenth was Daenama. 11th was Nama. 12th was Daesa. 13th was Sosa. 14th was Gilsa. 15th was Daeo. 16th was Soo. 17th was Jowi.
The king, after establishing the six divisions, divided them equally into two, and made two of his daughters each lead a district's girls, and split the friends into teams. From autumn, seventh month, from the full moon, everyday early they assembled in the greater division's garden and did needlework, and on the second night they ceased. On the fifteenth day, when the king considered the scale of their achievements, and the losers placed out wine and food and paid homage to the winners. Therefore, this song and danced Baekhui [a type of play], and they all composed poems and called the best actor. At that time, one girl from the losing side got up and danced and recited a poem, saying, "Hoeso, Hoeso." This sound was sad and elegant. Later people, because of this sound, made a song, and it's name is the Hoeso song.

After I die, when it comes to succeeding to the great rank, do not forget the wishes of the deceased." Winter, tenth month. The king died. He was buried within the orchard at Sa hill.

Talhae Isageum

Talhae Isageum (he was also called Tohae), at the time he became king, was 62 years old. His last name was Seok, and his wife was lady Ahyo. Talhae was originally born in the country of Tapana. This country lies 1,000 ri to the northeast of Wa [Japan]. In the past, this country's king married a woman and the king's woman became his legal wife, and she became pregnant in the seventh year, and gave birth to a giant egg. The king said, "A human giving birth to an egg is an inauspicious sign." He was going to get rid of it, but the woman would not tolerate that. So he bound it in silk and placed it in a box alongside some valuables. Then he set it adrift and let it go where it would. First it went to the coast in Geumgwan [in Gaya], but the people of Geumgwan thought it suspicious and would not take it, and so it went to the mouth of the port of Ajin in Jinhan. It was the 39th year of the kingship of Hyeokgeose. At that time, there was an old lady on the beach, and with a rope she pulled it to the shore. She opened it and there was a little boy inside. This old woman took the child and raised it, and it grew to have a strong body, and was 9 cheok tall. He was elegant, charming, delicate, and bright, and his knowledge surpassed other men. It is also said that this child did not know its last name, but when the box first came, there was a magpie that flew crying which accompanied it. Therefore they abbreviated the magpie character "鵲" and "Seok" (昔) became his last name. Also, because he came out of an orange box, he was named Talhae. Talhae first worked as a fisherman along with the mother who raised him. He was very diligent, and so his mother said to him, "You are not an ordinary person. Your physique and appearance are extraordinary, and you should go study, and become famous by your achievements." Therefore, he applied himself to study and inquiry, and also came to learn geography. Looking on Mt. Yangsan there was the house of Hogong, and it was an auspicious place, so he drew up its dimensions and dwelt there. This place afterwards became Wolseong Castle. In the fifth year of King Namhae, the king heard of his genius, and he married him to his daughter. In the seventh year, he was confirmed as Chancellor, and entrusted with matters of the administration. When Yuri was about to die, the former king left his orders, saying "After I die, there need not be discussion of sons and sons-in-law, but rather about the the oldest and wisest. The king happily said to his attendants, "How can it not be that this child has been sent to me from heaven to succeed me?" Then he took the child in and raised it, and when he was grown he was clever and wise.
