Adalla Isageum


Adalla Isageum took the throne. He was the oldest child of Ilseong. He was seven cheok tall, and his great broad form was wondrous. His mother was from the Park clan, the daughter of King Chisorye. His wife was Naerye of the Park clan. She was the daughter of King Jima.
First year, third month. Gyewon was made Isan, and entrusted with military and administrative matters.
Second year, spring, first month. The king personally made sacrifices at the shrine to the founder. There was a great amnesty. Heungseon was made Ilgilsan.
Third year, summer, fourth month. There was a damaging frost. They opened the route of Gyeripryeong.
Fourth year, spring, second month. They first established the two districts of Gammul and Masan.Third month. The king took a tour of Jangryeongjin. Rosu died. Everyone was given Jeong gowns.
Fifth year, spring, third month. The mountain ridge of Jukryeong was opened. People of Wa sent an emissary.
Seventh year, summer, fourth month. There was violent rain. The Alcheon river overflowed and swept away people and houses. The north gate of Gin castle collapsed on its own.
Eighth year, autumn, seventh month. Locusts damaged the crops. In the sea many fish came out dead.
Ninth year. The king visited the fortress of Sado. Rosu died.
11th year, spring, second month. A dragon was seen at the capital.
12th year, winter, tenth month. Asan Gilseon plotted a rebellion. It was found out and he feared being punished, so he fled to Baekje. The king sent a letter requesting repatriation, but Baekje would not consent. The king was very angry and led out an army to attack them. Baekje defended at the fortress of Yeongseong and would not come out. Our army used up all of its provisions and returned.
13th year, spring, first month, first day of the month. There was a solar eclipse.
14th year, autumn, seventh month. Baekje sacked two forts in the west of the country, and captured 1,000 of the populace, and fled. Eighth month. The king ordered Ilgilsan Heungseon to lead 20,000 men and attack them. The king also led 8,000 cavalry to the Han river and faced them. Baekje was terrified, and returned the captured men and women, and begged for peace.
15th year, summer, fourth month. Isan Gyewon died. Heungseon was made Isan.
17th year, spring, second month. Major repairs were made to the shrine to the founder. Autumn, seventh month. There was an earthquake at the capital. Forst damaged the crops. Winter, tenth month. Baekje attacked the borders.
18th year, spring. The crops were expensive and the people starved.
19th year, spring, first month. Gudo was made Pajinsan. Gusuhye was made Ilgilsan. Second month. There were ceremonies at the shrine to the founder. There was a great plague in the capital.
20th year, summer, first month. Himiko, queen of Wa, sent a emissary.
21st year, spring, first month. It rained earth. Second month. There was a drought, and the wells and springs were thirsty.
31st year, spring, third month. The king died.

Beolhyu Isageum


Belohyu (by one source Balhwi) Isageum became king. He was of the Seok clan, son of Guchugakgan, son of King Talhae. His mother was from the Kim clan, Lady Jijinnaerye. Adalla Isageum died without any children and the country's people made him king. The king divined the wind and clouds, and was prescient of rain and drought in time for the years to be prosperous or economical, and also he knew the whether men were wicked or upright, and people said he was as saint.
Second year, spring, first month. The king made sacrifices at the shrine to the founder. There was a great amnesty. Second month. Bae was made Pajinsan, Gudo was made Ilgilsan, and Gusuhye was made master of the right and left armies. He conquered the country of Somun, and this wass the first time that the title of army master was used.
Third year, spring, first month. The king made a tour of the states and districts, and observed the local customs. Summer, fifth month, last day of the month. There was a solar eclipse. Autumn, seventh month. The district of Namsin presented the king with an auspicious stalk of rice.
Fourth year, spring, third month. The king ordered the states and districts not to construct public works and thus ignore the agricultural season. Winter, tenth month. In the north there was heavy snow. Its depth was one jang (3.3 meters).
Fifth year, spring, second month. Baekje came and attacked the fort of Mosan. The king ordered Pajinsan Gudo to dispatch troops to repel them.
Sixth year, autumn, seventh month. Gudo fought with Baekje at Guyang and bested them. He killed and captured over 500 men.
Seventh year, autumn, eighth month. Baekje attacked Wonsanhyang on the western border. They also invaded and surrounded the fort of Bugokseong. Gudo led 500 top cavalry to attack them. The Baekje soldiers feigned flight, and Gudo followed them to Wasan. There he was defeated. Because of his failed strategy, the king demoted Gudo to master of the fort of Bugok, and Seolji was made master of the left army.
Eighth year, autumn, ninth month. A comet was seen in the horn and neck mansions.
Ninth year, spring, first month. Gukryang was made Achan, Sulmyeong was made first Gilchan. In the third month, there was snow in the capital, and its depth was three cheok. Summer, fifth month. There was heavy rain. The mountains collapsed in over ten locations.
Tenth year, spring, first month, first day of the month. There was a solar eclipse. Third month. Han Gibu’s daughter gave birth to quintuplets, four boys and one girl. In the sixth month, there was a great famine in Wa. Over 1,000 people came seeking food aid.
Eleventh year, summer, sixth month, last day of the month. There was a solar eclipse.
Thirteenth year, summer, second month. The palace was repaired again. Third month. There was a drought. Summer, fourth month. Lightning struck a great tree in the southern palace grounds. Also, lightening struck the east gate of the Fort Geum. The King died.

Nahae Isageum


Nahae Isageum became king. He was the grandson of King Beolhyu. His mother was lady Naerye. His wife was from the Seok clan. She was the older sister of King Jobun. His appearance was dignified and his manly demeanor extraordinary, and he possessed surpassing talent. The sons of the previous king, crown prince Goljeong and his second son, Imae, both preceded him in death. His great grandson was still too young, and so the son of Imae was made king — this was Nahae Isageum. That year, from the first month to the fourth month, there was no rain, but on the day of the king’s accession there was heavy rain, and the people all rejoiced.
Second year, spring, first month. The king paid respects at the shrine to the founder.
Third year, spring, fourth month. A willow tree that lay before the shrine to the founder stood up of its own accord. Fifth month. There was flooding in the west of the country. The districts and provinces that met with flooding were exempted from taxes for one year. Autumn, seventh month. Messengers were dispatched to succor [those affected by the flooding].
Fourth year, autumn, seventh month. Baekje assaulted the borders.
Fifth year, autumn, seventh month. Venus was seen in the daytime. A frost fell and killed the plant life. Ninth month, last day of the month. There was a solar eclipse. There was a grand inspection in Alcheon.
Sixth year, spring second month. There were cordial relations with the countries of Gaya. Third month, last day of the month. There was a solar eclipse. There was a great drought. There was an examination of prisoners in the capital and the provinces, and sentences were reduced.
Eighth year, winter, tenth month. The Mohe assaulted the borders. The peach and plum flowers blossomed. The people suffered a great plague.
Tenth year, spring second month. Jinchung was made Ilbeolchan and took over the administration of government. Autumn, seventh month. There was frost and hail that killed the crops. Venus crossed over the moon. Eighth month. Foxes cried at the gardens in Fort Geum and the shrine to the founder.
Twelfth year, spring, first month. Prince Ieum (also known as Naeum) was made Ibeolchan. He doubled as overseer of infantry and cavalry matters in the capital and the provinces.
Thirteenth year, spring, second month. The king took a tour of the western districts and villages for ten days, then he returned. Summer, fourth month. Men of Wa violated the borders. The king dispatched Ibeolchan Ieum to lead soldiers in repelling them.
Fourteenth year, autumn, seventh month. The eight states of Posang planned to invade Gaya. The prince of Gaya came seeking aid. The king ordered the crown prince Uro and Ibeolchan Ieum the soldiers of the six districts and go to aid them. They attacked and killed the general of the eight countries, captured 6,000 men, and returned.
Fifteenth year. In spring and summer there was a drought. The king dispatched messengers to examine the prisoners of the districts and villages. Excepting those with double capital offense, they were all pardoned.
Sixteenth year, spring, first month. Hwongyun was made Ichan, and Yujong was made Ilgilchan.
Seventeenth year, spring, third month. Gaya sent their prince as a hostage. Spring, fifth month. There was heavy rain that flooded and destroyed the buildings of the populace.
Nineteenth year, spring, third month. There was a great wind that broke the trees. Autumn, seventh month. Baekje came to invade Yogeo fort in the west of the country. They killed Seolbu, master of the fort. The king ordered Ibeolchan Ieum to lead 6,000 spirited troops to attack Baekje. They took the fort of Sahyeon. Winter, 12th month. There was thunder.
23rd year, autumn, seventh month. Weapons in military storage came out on their own. Men of Baekje came and surrounded the fort of Jangsan. The king himself led soldiers out to attack and drive them off.
25th year, spring, third month. Ibeolchan Ieum passed away. Chunghwon was made Ibeolchan and charged with handling military affairs. Autumn, seventh month. There was a grand inspection west of Mt. Yangsan.
27th year, summer, fourth month. Hail damaged the beans and barley. A man in south Sinhyeon died, then came back to life a month later. Winter, tenth month. Baekje soldiers entered Uduju. Ibeolchan Chunghwon led soldiers to repel them. He reached Unggok and was defeated by the bandits, and came back alone on a horse. He was demoted to Jinju, and Yeonjin was made Ibeolchan and charged with handling military affairs.
29th year, autumn, seventh month. Ibeolchan Yeonjin and Baekje fought below Mt. Bongsan, and he defeated them. He killed and captured over 1,000 men. Eighth month. The fort of Bongsan was built.
31st year. There was no rain from the spring until the seventh month in autumn. The people starved. The King issued orders to provide relief by opening the granaries. Winter, tenth month. There was an inspection of prisoners inside and outside the capital, and those with light crimes were pardoned.
32nd year, spring, second month. The king went hunting in the southwest districts and villages. He returned in the third month. Pajinchan Ganghwon was made Ichan.
34th year, spring, fourth month. Snakes in the southern storehouse cried for three days. Autumn, ninth month. There was an earthquake. Winter, tenth month. There was heavy snow. Its depth was five seok.
35th year, spring, third month. The king died.

Jobun Isageum


Jobun Isageum was made King. He was also known as Jaegui. His surname was Seok. He was the grandson of Beolhyu Isaguem. His father was Goljeong, also known as Heuljeong, king of Galmun. His mother was lady Okmo of the Kim clan, daughter of the Gudo, king of Galmun. His wife was Lady Aihye, daughter of Nahae Isageum. Before the king was going to die, he left word that his son-in-law Jobun should succeed to the throne. The king was tall and his appearance was exceptional. In attending to matters his made judgments wisely, and the men who surrounded him were deferential and respectful of him.
First year. The king made Yeonchung Ichan, and entrusted him with military and domestic affairs. Autumn, seventh month. The king made observances at the shrine of the founder.
Second year, autumn, seventh month. Ichan Uro was made the great general, and he attacked and captured the country of Gammun. Thereby this land was made into a district [of Silla].
Third year, summer, fourth month. Men from Wa suddenly surrounded Fort Geum. The king himself went out to fight them. The enemy was defeated and fled. The king dispatched light cavalry to pursue and attack them. They killed and captured over 1,000 men.
Fourth year, summer, fourth month. A great wind set the roof tiles flying. Fifth month. Wa soldiers invaded the eastern border. Autumn, seventh month. Ichan Uro and the men of Wa fought at Sado. Using the wind, he set fire to their boats, and enemies who crossed the water died in great numbers.
Sixth year, spring, first month. The king toured the east and provided aid to the people.
Seventh year, spring, second month. King Aeumbu of Golbeol led multidues of people to come and surrender. They were granted houses and estates and settled comfortably, and that land became a district [of Silla].
Eighth year, autumn, eighth month. Locusts damaged the crops.
Eleventh year. Baekje invaded the western border.
Thirteenth year, autumn. It was a grand bumper year. Gota district submitted an auspicious grain of rice.
Fifteenth year, autumn, first month. Ichan Uro was made Seobulhan and charged with administering military affairs.
Sixteenth year, winter, tenth month, Goguryeo invaded the northern border. Uro led soldiers and went out to repel them, but they could not defeat them. He retreated to fortify the pallisade of Maduchek. That night was bitter cold, and so Uro consoled the soldiers by kindling fires to make them warm. Everyone was very thankful.
Seventeenth year, winter, tenth month. In the southeast there was a white steam like a bolt of silk. Eleventh month. In the capital there was an earthquake.
Eighteenth year, summer, fifth month. The King died.

Cheomhae Isageum


Cheomhae Isageum was made king. He was the younger brother of King Jobun by the same mother.
First year, autumn, seventh month. The king made observances at the shrine to the founder. He pronounced that his father, Goljeong, would be pronounced Divine King Galmun (Seshin Galmun).
The Ron says: When Emperor Xuan of Han acceded to the throne there was a report of the administration to him. The man who followed him was his son. Therefore he lowered the status of his father and mother, and did not observe rites to them, instead respecting right conduct toward his ancestors. For this reason the father who gave birth to an emperor was styled “Chin” and posthumously called “Do,” the grieved, and his mother was called “Do Hu,” grieved queen, like a feudal lord king. This is in accordance with scripture, and is the law of the myriad realms. Therefore Emperor Guangwu of Han and Emperor Yingzong of Song took this as the law and enacted it. In Silla, there were none from the King’s relatives who entered into the great succession of lords who did not revere their father and call him King. Not only did this happen, but there were also cases where they venerated their fathers-in-law. This is not proper social behavior, and certainly cannot be imitated.
Second year, spring, first month. Ichan Janghwon was made Seobulhan and charged with the administration of the state. Second month. Messengers were dispatched to Goguryeo to sue for peace.
Third year, summer, fourth month. Men of Wa killed Seobulhan Uro. Autumn, seventh month. The Southern Hall was built on the grounds south of the palace. This “namdong” was also called the “Dodang.” Yangbu was made Ichan.
Fifth year, spring, first month. The King heard matters of administration in the Southern Hall for the first time. There was a man of Han Gibu, named Budo, whose household was poor and who did not flatter others. He was skilled at writing and calculation and was well-known at that time, so the King summoned him, made him Achan, and entrusted him with work in matters of of object storage.
Seventh year, summer, fourth month. A dragon was seen in the lake east of the palace. A willow tree that lay south of Fort Geum stood up on its on. From the fifth month to the seventh month there was no rain. The King made sacrifices at the shrine to the founder and at famous mountains, then it rained. That year there was a food shortage, and there were much thieving and banditry.
Ninth year, autumn, ninth month. Baekje came to invade. Ilbeolchan Ikjong counter-attacked them to the west of Goeguk but was killed by the enemy. Winter, tenth month. Baekje attacked the fort of Bongsan, but it did not fall.
Tenth year, summer, third month. Three giant fish came out of the sea to the east of the country. They were three jang long and one jang, two seok high. Winter, tenth month, last day of the month. There was a solar eclipse.
Thirteenth year, autumn, seventh month. There was a drought and locusts and the year saw a poor harvest. There was much thievery.
Fourteenth year, summer. There was heavy rain. The were mountain landslides in over 40 locations. Autumn, seventh month. A comet went into the eastern quarter. After 25 days it disappeared.
Fifteenth year, spring, second month. The fort of Dalbeol was constructed and Nama Geukjeung was made master of the fort. Third month. Baekje sent messengers to sue for peace, but the terms were not agreed to. Winter, 12th month, 28th day. The King fell ill and died.

Michu Isaguem


Michu Isaguem was made king. He was also called Michu [different characters]. His last name was Kim. His mother was from the Park clan, daughter of the Kalmun King Ilji. His wife was lady Goangmyung of the Seok clan, daughter of King Jobun. His ancestor Alji came out of Gyerim and King Talhae took him and raised him in the court. Later he promoted him to Daebo. Alji begot Saehan, Saehan begot Ado, Ado begot Suryu, Suryu begot Ukbo, Ukbo begot Gudo, and Gudo was thereby the parent of Michu. Cheomhae had no children, so the people of the country made Michu King. This was the beginning of the Kim clan’s possession of the state.
First year, spring, third month. A dragon was seen in the pond east of the palace. Autumn, seventh month. There was a fire at the west gate of Fory Geum. The fire spread and burned more than 300 men’s residences.
Second year, spring, first month. Ichan Yangbu was made Seobulhan, and he was charged with administration of military affairs. Second month. The king himself made observances at the shrine to the founder of the state. There was a great amnesty, and the king’s father Gudo was pronounced King of Galmun.
Third year, spring, second month. The King made a tour of the east and gazed upon the sea. Third month. He visited Mt. Hwangsan, made inquiry of the elderly and those who were poor and could not get by on their own, and provided relief to them.
Fifth year, autumn, eighth month. Baekje came and attacked Fort Bongsan. The master of the fort, Jinseon, led 200 choice knights out to attack them. The enemy lost and fled. The king heard of this and promoted Jinseon to Ilgilchan and generously rewarded the knights.
Seventh year. In the spring and summer there was no rain. The king met a group of his vassals in the southern hall and personally inquired into administration, punishments, profit, and loss. He also sent five messengers to tour the and and inquire into the suffering of the people.
Eleventh year, summer, second month. The king made an order that in general things that are detrimental to agriculture be eliminated completely. Autumn, seventh month. Frost and hail damaged the crops. Winter, eleventh month. Baekje assaulted the borders.
Fifteenth year, spring, second month. Vassals sought to repair the palace, but the king would not go along with increasing the burdens of the people.
Seventeenth year, spring, fourth month. A violent wind uprooted trees. Winter, tenth month. Baekje soldiers cme and surrounded the fort of Goegok. The king ordered Pajinchan Jeongwon to lead soldiers to repel them.
Nineteenth year, spring, fourth month. There was a drought and an inspection of prisoners.
20th year, spring, first month. The king promoted Honggwon to Ichan, Yangjil to Ilgilchan, and Gwanggyeom to Sachan. Second month. The king went to the shrine to the founder. Autumn, ninth month. There was a grand inspection to the west of Mt. Yangsan.
22nd year, autumn, ninth month. Baekje assaulted the borders. Winter, tenth month. THey surrounded the fort of Goegok. The king ordered Ilgilchan Yangjil to lead soldiers and attack them.
23rd year, spring, second month. The king toured and gave aid to all the forts in the west of the country. Winter, tenth month. The King died. He was buried in a great mound, called Jukjangreung.

Yurye Isageum


Yurye Isageum was made king. The Gogi has the same names for both the third and the 14th kings, Yuri, also called Yurye. It is not known which is correct. He was the oldest son of King Jobun. His mother was from the Seok clan, daughter of King Naeum of Kalmun. During and evening in the past, starlight entered into her mouth and thereby she became pregnant. On the night that she gave birth, a strange fragrance filled the room.
Second year, spring, first month. The king made observances at the shrine to the founder. Second month. He promoted Ichan Honggwon to Seobulhan, and entrusted him with critical tasks.
Third year, spring, first month. Baekje sent envoys to sue for peace. Third month. There was a drought.
Fourth year, summer, fourth month. Men from Wa attacked Ilryebu, kindled fires, and burned it. They captured 1,000 men and left.
Sixth year, summer, fifth month. The king heard that Wa soldiers had arrived, so he adjusted the boat rudders and repaired armor and weapons.
Seventh year, summer, fifth month. There was a great flood, and the fort at Wolseong collapsed.
Eighth year, spring, first month. The king promoted Malgu to Ibeolchan. Malgu was loyal and had many clever designs. The king frequently conferred with him on important points of administration.
Ninth year, summer, sixth month. Wa soldiers attacked and sacked the fort at Sado. The king ordered Ilgilchan Daigok to lead soldiers and recapture it. Autumn, seventh month. There was a drought and locusts.
Tenth year, spring, second month. The fort at Sado was rebuilt, and the king moved 80-some high-born families from Sabeolju there.
Eleventh year, summer. Wa soldiers came and attacked Fort Jangbong, but they could not overtake it. Autumn, seventh month. Tasa district submitted an auspicious ear of grain.
12th year, spring. The King addressed his vassals, saying: “The men of way have again and again attacked our forts and villages, and the people cannot dwell in peace. I want to make a plan with Baekje and at the same time as them cross the sea and invade this country. What say ye?”
Seobulhan Honggwon replied: “Our men do not know how to fight on the water, and by rashly invading this distant place, we will likely be in unfathomable danger. Furthermore the deception of Baekje is great, and they regularly plan to swallow up the heart of our country. Therefore it will probably be difficult to make a plan together with them.”
The King said, “So be it.”

Fourteenth year, spring, first month. Jiryang was made Ichan, Jangheun was made Ilgilchan, and Sunseon was made Sachan. The state of Iseogo came and attacked Fort Geum. We mustered a large number of troops and defended it but we could not repel them. Suddenly there was a strange group of soldiers who came, and their numbers were too many to be recorded. The men all wore bamboo leaves on the ears and fought the enemy together with our army. We routed them, and afterwards was not known to where [the strange men] returned. Some men saw myriad piles of bamboo leaves at Jukjangreung. As a result, the men of our country said that the previous king had aided in the fight by means of shadow soldiers.
Fifteenth year, spring, second month. There was a heavy fog in the capital, such that men could not be distinguished [from one another]. After five days it lifted. Winter, second month. The king died.

Girim Isageum


Girim Isaguem (also known as Girib Isageum) became king. He was the grandson of Jobun Isageum. His father was Ichan Geolsuk (it is also said that Geolsuk was the grandson of Jobun). His character was generous, and the people all praised him.
Second year, spring, first month. The king promoted Jangheun to Ichan, and charged him with administration of military affairs. Second month. The king made observances at the shrine to the founder.
Third year, spring, first month. There was an exchange of envoys with Wa. Second month. The king toured Biyeolhol and personally inquired into the well-being of the elderly and impoverished, and gave them grain depending on their circumstances. Third month. He went to Uduju and saw a from afar a great white mountain. The two countries of Lelang and Daifang both pledged their allegiance and servitude.
Fifth year. In the spring and summer there was a drought.
Seventh year, autumn, eighth month. There was an earthquake, and a spring gushed up. Ninth month. In the capital there was an earthquake leading to collapsed homes and casualties.
Tenth year. The country was renamed “Silla.”
Thirteeth year, summer, fifth month. The king fell ill and did not recover for a long time. There was an amnesty for prisoners in the capital and the provinces. Sixth month. The king died.

Heulhae Isageum


Heulhae Isageum was made king. He was the grandson of Nahae Isageum. He father was Gakgan Uro. His motehr was lady Myeongwon, daughter of king Jobun. Uro was exceptional in serving his lord and was burdened with the office of Seobulhan. Seeing that Heulhae’s appearance was exceptionally wondrous, and that his personality was bright and shrewd, and that in handling affairs he surpassed lesser men, so he told the feudal lords “The one who will make prosperous my household is certainly this child.” Later, Girim died without child, so the myriad ministers had a conference and said, “Heulhae is young but has virtue beyond his years,” and they made him king.
Second year, spring, first month. Geubri was made Achan and charged with administration of important tasks and military matters in the capital and provinces. Second month. The king himself made observances at the shrine to the founder.
Third year, spring, second month. The King of Wa sent envoys for his son who was seeking a bride. Achan Geubri’s daughter was sent.
Fourth year, autumn, seventh year. There was a drought and locusts, and the people starved. The king issued relief to them.
Fifth year, spring, first month. The king promoted Achan Geubri to Ichan. Second month. There were repairs to the palace. It did not rain.
Eighth year. In spring and summer there was a drought. The king personally examined the sentences of prisoners, and many of them were released.
Ninth year, spring, second month. The king made an order: “because of the drought, this year’s agriculture did not go well. Now that the land is fertile and its vitality has risen up, and farming work is about to being. Therefore all the general labor levied on the people will all be terminated.”
21st year. The pond of Byeokgol was first opened. The length of its bank was 1,800 bo.
28nd year, spring, second month. Envoys were sent to Baekje. Third month. There was rain and hail. Summer, fourth month. There a mist fell.
35th year, spring, second month. The country of Wa sent envoys for marriage. They were refused because all the king’s daughters were already married. Summer, fourth month. There was a violent wind that uprooted a great tree to the south of the palace.
36th year, spring, first month.The king promoted Gangse to Ibeolchan. Second month. The king of Wa sent documents terminating their foreign relations.
37th year. Wa soldiers suddenly came to Bungdo. They sacked the households in the borderlands and then proceeded to surround Fort Geum and quickly assault it. The king wanted to dispatch soldiers to fight back, then Ibeolchan Gangse said, “ The enemy has come far and we cannot match their spear-points. That can’t compare with being leisurely about it and getting their army tired.” The king agreed. The gates were shut and they did not go out. The enemy ate everything [they had] and was going to retreat. The king ordered that Gangse lead light cavalry out to pursue them and drive them off.
39th year. The water in the palace well violently overflowed.
