King Gusu


King Gusu was also called Gwisu. He was the eldest son of King Chogo. He was seven feet tall and unusually exceptional in his power. In the 49th year of his reign, King Chogo died and Gusu succeeded him.
Third year, autumn, eighth month. The Mohe came and surrounded the fortress of Jeokhyeon. The master of the fortress repelled them, and the bandits retreated. The King led 800 choice cavalry in pursuit of them, and fought them near the fortress of Sado, and broke them. Many of them were killed or captured.
Fourth year, spring, second month. Twin palisades were constructed alongside the fortress of Sado, and from east to west they ran in parallel for 10 ri. The [people of] Jeokhyeon were divided and some made to defend it [the palisade].
Fifth year. The king led soldiers to surround the Sillan fortress of Jangsan. The king of Silla himself led and army out to attack them, and our army was defeated.
Eighth year, summer, fifth month. In the east of the country there was great rainfall, and the mountains collapsed in more than 40 places. Sixth month, last day of the month. There was a solar eclipse. Autumn, eighth month. There was a great examination of the area to the west of the Han river.
Ninth year, spring, second month. Commissioners were ordered to repair the dikes and embankments. Third month. The king made a proclamation encouraging production of agriculture. Summer, sixth month. It rained fish in the capital of the king. Winter, tenth month. Soldiers were dispatched to Udujin in Silla, and the inhabitants were robbed and kidnapped. The Sillan general Chunghwon led 5,000 soldiers to counter-attack, and at Unggok they made a great rout [of the Baekje forces]. Only the cavalry escaped. 11th month, last day of the month. There was a solar eclipse.
11th year, autumn, seventh month. The Sillan Ilgil XYeonchin came and invaded. Our army counter-attacked near Mt. Bongsan but could not overcome them. Winter, tenth month. Venus was seen.
14th year, spring, third month. It hailed. Summer, fourth month. There was a great drought. The king prayed in the eastern court, and it rained.
16th year, winter, tenth month. The king hunted at a cold spring. 11th month. There was a great pestilence. The Mohe came to the borders of Ugok, and kidnapped the people there. The King led 300 spirited solders to repel them. The bandits hid themselves, then came to attack, and our army suffered a great defeat.
18th year, summer, fourth month. There was hail the size of chestnuts. Some of the birds that were struck died.
21st year. The king died.

King Saban


There is no record of King Saban

King Goi


King Goi was the second son of King Gwisu. King Gusu died in the 21st year of his reign. His eldest son, Saban, succeeded him. However, he was too young and could not manage the government. King Chogo's younger brother, who had the same mother, became king.
Third year, winter, tenth month. The king went hunting on a great island in the western sea. He shot 40 deer.
Fifth year, spring, first month. Worship of heaven and earth was made using drums and whistles. Second month. The king went hunting in Busan. After 50 days, he returned. Summer, fourth month. A pillar at the gate of the king's palace trembled. A yellow dragon flew out from this gate.
Sixth year, spring, first month. There was no rain until summer, fifth month, when it rained.
Seventh year. Soldiers were dispatched to invade Silla. Summer, fourth month. Bae Jinchung was made General of the Left, and entrusted with infantry and cavalry matters both inside and outside the capital. Autumn, seventh month. A great inspection was made of the Seokcheon river, there were a pair of birds at the headwaters of the river. The king shot them both.
Ninth year, spring, second month. The king ordered the people of the country to begin making rice fields of the marshes to the south. Summer, fourth month. The king's uncle, Jil, was made Marshal Bulwark of the Right. Jil's character was loyal and resolute, and his plans did not go awry. Autumn, seventh month. The king left the west gate to watch archery.
Tenth year, spring, first month. A great altar was constructed, and sacrifices were made to heaven, earth, the mountains, and the rivers.
13th year, summer. There was a great drought, and there was no wheat. Autumn, eighth month. The provincial governor of Youzhou in Wei, Something Qiu Jian, together with the leaders of the Lelang commandery, Liu Jia, and the master of Sufang, Wang Jun, attacked Goguryeo. The king therefore dispatched Jinchung, General of the Left, to invade the border of Lelang and take its people. Jia [Liu Jia] heard this and was greatly angered, and the king feared being attacked and returned those people who were taken as slaves.
14th year, spring, first month. Sacrifices were made to heaven and earth in the south garden. Second month. Bae Jinchung was made Marshal Bulwark of the Right. Jin was also made General of the Left, and entrusted with matters of man and horse.
15th year, spring and summer. There was a drought. In the winter, the people starved. The king opened the granaries and relieved them. Also the taxes from this year were returned.
16th year, spring, first month, hour of the metal cow. Venus went into the moon.
22nd year, autumn, ninth month. The king went out leading men to attack Silla, and the Sillan soldiers attacked them west of Goegok and were defeated. Our men killed their general, Ikjong. Winter, tenth month. Men were dispatched to attack the fortress of Bongsan in Silla, but they could not take it.
24th year, spring, first month. There was a drought, and the trees and grass all withered.
25th year, spring. The Mohe chief Ragal presented 10 good horses to the king. The king rewarded his messenger greatly, and sent him back home.
26th year, autumn, ninth month. A purple cloud was seen east of the palace. It was like a storied tower.
27th year, spring, first month. The king established the following Sahe ministry offices: Minister of the Interior, charged with handling executive decalrations, the Minister of the Treasury, the Minister of Rites and Ceremonies, the Minister of Defense charged with housing, defense, and matters of soliders, the Minister of the Court charged with Judgments and Punishments, and the Minister of the Military, charged with external matters of man and horse. Also, the ranks of Dalsol, Eunsol, Deoksol, Hansol, and Nasol were established, and in addition those of Jangdeok, Sideok, Godeok, Gyedeok, Daedeok, Mundok, Mudok, Jwagun, Jinmu, and Geuku. The six Sahe offices were of first rank, the Dalsol second, the Eunsol third, Deoksol fourth, Hansol fifth, and Nasol sixth. Jangdeok was seventh, Sideok eighth, Godeok ninth, Gyedoek tenth, Daedeok eleventh, Mundok twelfth, Mudok thirteenth, Jwagun fourteenth, Jinmu fifteenth, and Geuke sixteenth. Second month. The king proclaimed that the first six ranks should don purple outerware, and hang silver flowers from their crown. Those above the eleventh rank would wear crimson, and those of sixteenth or higher blue. Third month. The king's younger brother Usu was made Minister of the Interior.
28th year, spring, first month. On the first day of the year, the king, wearing purple robes and blue silk pants, with a gold flower hanging from his black net hat, wearing a white belt of leather and black leather shoes, sat on his throne in the south hall and listened to the matters [of the kingdom]. Second month. Bae Jinga was made Minister of the Treasury. Udu was made Minister of Rites and Ceremonies. Gosu was made Minister of Defense. Gonno was made Minister of the Court. Yugi was made Minister of the Military. Third month. The king sent messengers to Silla to sue for peace. They did not comply.
29th year, spring, first month. The king made an edict that all public officials who took bribes or stole things would be charged with three times the amount of what they stole and imprisoned until the end of their lives.
33rd year, Autumn, eighth month. The king dispatched soldiers to attack the Sillan fortress at Bongsan. The master of the fortress, Jikseon, led a sortie of 200 of his most robust troops and defeated them.
36th year, autumn, ninth month. A comet went into the purple palace.
39th year, winter, 11th month. The king dispatched troops to attack Silla.
45th year, winter, tenth month. The king sent soldiers to attack Silla, and they surrounded the fortress of Goegok.
50th year, autumn, ninth month. The king dispatched soldiers to attack the border with Silla.
53rd year, spring, first month. The king send messengers to Silla to sue for peace. Winter, eleventh month. The king died.

King Chaekgye


King Chaekgye was also called Cheonggye was the son of King Goi. His stature was tall and great, and he was spirited and heroic. When Goi died, he succeeded him. The King conscribed adult males to repair the fortress of Wirye. Goguryeo attacked Daifang. Daifang sought help from us. Previously, the king had married the daughter of the Daifang, Bogwa, and made her his concubine. Therefore he said, "Daifang is the country of my relatives, how can I not hearken this summons?" Then he led a force out to rescue them. Goguryeo resented this, and the king feared a reprisal attack, and so had the fortresses of Acha and Saseong repaired and provisioned.
Second year, spring, first month. The king visted Dongmyeong shrine.
13th year, autumn, ninth month. People from Han and Yemaek invaded. The king led a force to defend, and our enemies killed him.

King Bunseo


King Bunseo was the oldest son of king Chaekgye. From his youth he was bright and intelligent, and in his performance of rites he was bold and upright. His father the kin gloved him, and never seperated him from his side. When the king died, he succeeded him. Winter, tenth month. There was a great amnesty.
Second year, spring, first month. The king visisted Dongmyeong shrine.
Fifth year, summer, fourth month. A comet was seen during the day.
Seventh year, spring, second month. The king secretly led an army to go and take the western terrritory of Lelang. Winter, tenth month. The king, by an assassin sent by the master of the commandery at Lelang, was killed.

King Biryu


King Biryu was the second child of King Gusu. His character was generous and benevolent, and he was poweful and skilled with a bow. For a long time, he resided among the people, and he was praised far and wide. After the death of Bunseo, all his children were too young to succeed. Therefore, at the recommendation of the ministers and people, he took the throne.
Fifth year, spring, first month, first day of the year. There was a solar eclipse.
Ninth year, spring, second month. The king sent ministers to make a tour and listen to the grievances of the people. The widowed and alone could not provide for themselves, and they were given three sok of grain. Summer, fourth month. The king visited Dongmyeong shrine. Bae Haegu was made Minister of the Military.
Tenth year, spring, first month. Sacrifices were made to heaven and earth in south of the city. The king himself slew the animals.
13th year, spring. There was a drought. A great star shot in the west. Summer, fourth month. The wells of the king's capital overflowed. A black dragon was seen inside of it.
17th year, autumn, eighth month. A tower for shooting was made in the west of the palace. Every month on the first day of the month, he practiced shooting.
18th year, spring, first month. The king's half-brother, Ubok, was made Minister of the Interior. Autumn, seventh month.Venus was seen during the day. In the south of the country, locusts damaged the grain.
22nd year, winter, tenth month. There was a sound in heaven like the wind and the waves were smashing against each other. 11th month. The king went hunting north of Guwon and shot a deer.
24th year, autumn, seventh month. There was a cloud like a red crow that came toward the sun. Ninth omnth. The minister of the interior, Ubok, took control of the fortresses north of the Han river and rebelled. The king dispatched soldiers to attack him.
28th year. In the spring and summer, there was a great drought. The grass and trees withered, and the rivers ran dry until autumn, when it rained in the seventh month. That year there was a famine, and there were incidents of cannibalism.
30th year, summer, fifth month. A star fell. There was a fire in the king's palace. It spread to the houses of the people. Autumn, seventh month. They repaired the palace. Bae Jinui was made minister of the interior. Winter, 12th month. There was thunder.
32nd year, winter, first day of the month. There was a solar eclipse.
33rd year, spring, first month. On 辛巳, a comet was seen in Kui, one of the 28 lunar mansions.
34th year, spring, second month. Silla dispatched messengers with gifts for the court.
41st year, winter, tenth month. The king died.

King Gye


King Gye was the oldest son of King Bunseo. He was naturally hard and brace, and skilled with horse and bow. When Bunseo died, Gye was too young to succeed him, so Biryu succeeded him, dying in the 41st year of his own reign. Then Gye succeeded him.
Third year, autumn, ninth month. The king died.

King Geunchogo


King Geunchogo was the second son of king Biryu. His body and countenance were unusually robust, and he posessed far-reaching knowledge. When King Gye died, he succeeded him.
Second year, spring, first month. Sacrifices were made gods of heaven and earth. Bae Jinjeong was made Minister of the court: he was the queen's relative. His character was vicious and perverse, and he was not benevolent. He turned himself toward petty matters, and he relied on force to make his case. The people hated him.
21st year, spring, third month. Messengers were dispatched to present gifts to Silla.
23rd year, spring, third month, first day of the month. There was a solar eclipse. Messengers were dispatched to Silla, sent with two good horses.
24th year, autumn, ninth month. King Sayu of Goguryeo, at the head of 20,000 men on foot and horse, came to the village of Chiyang, and divided his forces to attack and sack the houses of the people. The king dispatched the crown prince with soldiers directly to Chiyang, and they quickly attacked and defeated them. They captured more than 5,000, and these prisoners were presented as gifts to the general and his warriors. Winter, 11th month. A great examination was made [of the troops] in the area south of the Han river. The flags used were all yellow.
26th year. Goguryeo raised soldiers and came. The king heard this, and his men hid in the ditches and canals. Then they suddenly rushed out and attacked them. The soldiers of Goguryeo were defeated. Winter. The king and the crown prince led 30,000 spirited troops to attack Goguryeo at the fortress of Pyeongyang. The King of Goguryeo, Sayu, fought powerfully to repel them, but was hit by a stray arrow and died. Our king led his men to retreat, and we moved our capital to Mt. Hansan.
27th month, spring, first month. Messengers were dispatched to the Jin court with tribute. Autumn, seventh month. There was an earthquake.
28th year, spring, second month. Messengers were dispatched to the Jin court with tribute. Autumn, seventh month. A fortress was built at Mt. Cheongmok. The master of the fortress of Doksan led 300 men and fled to Silla.
30th year, autumn, seventh month. Goguryeo came and attacked the northern lowlands at the fortress of Sugok, and took it. The king dispatched men to repel the invasion, but they were not successful. The king also had a general raise a large army to revenge themselves, but that year there was a drought and so the plan did not succeed. Winter, 11th month. The king died. The Goki [Record of Ancient Matters] says, when Baekje was founded, they did not keep written records. However, in this period they go the services of the scholar Go Heung, and he first began writing history. However, Go Heung is not made clear in any other records, and so it is not known who he was.

King Geungusu


King Geungusu was also called Hwisu. Geungusu was the son of King Geunchogo. Previously, Sayu, king of Goguryeo, himself came and invaded. King Geunchogo dispatched the crown prince to repel them, and he reached Bangeolyang and was goiung to give battle. A man from Goguryeo called Sagi, who was originally a man from Baekje and had mistakenly injured the hoof of the king's steed, feared punishment and fled to Goguryeo. Returning to Baekje at this time, he told the crown prince, "Their soldiers are many, but all of their numbers are meant to deceive you. The only valiant troops are the ones with the red banners — if you first break them, the other troops will not attack and flee of their own accord."
The crown prince followed his advice, and attacked and put them to a great rout, and he pursued them to the north, reaching all the way to the northwest of the fortress of Sugok. Geneal Makgohae then admonished him, saying "I have heard the taoists say, "Know when you have enough, and you will not be humiliated. Know when to stop, and you will not put yourself in danger. Now we have gained much: why do we need to seek more?"
The prince thought it good and stopped, and raised a mound of rocks as a memorium. Then he climbed to the top of it and said to those around him, "After today, who will again come to this place?" The earth there is full of cliffs and rocks, and cracked like the hoof of a horse. Other people, up to the present, stil call this place "the hoofprints of the crown prince." Geunchogo died in the 30th year of his reign, and Geungusu succeeded him.
Second year. The king's uncle on his mother's side, Jin Godo, was made Minister of the Interior. He was entrusted with matters of the administration. Winter, eleventh month. Goguryeo came and invaded the northern borders.
Third year, winter, tenth month. The king, his general, and 30,000 men invaded Goguryeo and attacked the fortress of Pyongyang. 11th year. Goguryeo came to attack.
Fifth year, spring, third month. An envoy was sent to the Jin court. This envoy went by sea and ran into a foul wind, and could not reach their destination and so returned. Summer, fourth month. It rained dirt for one day.
Sixth year. There was a great pestilence. Summer, fifth month. There was a fissure in the earth that was five jang deep and three jang wide. After three days, it closed.
Eighth year, spring. There was no rain until the sixth month. The people starved, to the point that some sold their children. The king sent public officials to give them grain.
Tenth year, spring, second month. There were three halos around the sun. Inside the palace, the king struck a great drum. Summer, fourth month. The king died.

King Chimnyu


King Chimnyu was the oldest son of King Geungusu. His mother was called Ai. He succeeded his father. Autumn, seventh month. Messengers were dispatched to the Jin court with tribute. Ninth month. The western monk Malananda came from Jin. The king received him, and kept him in the palace. All cordialities were extended to him. This was the first transmission of the Buddhist dharma [to Baekje].
Second year, spring, second month. They built a Buddhist temple at Mt. Hansan, and 10 people became monks. Winter, eleventh month. The king died.
