Accession of Emperor Sujin
Emperor Mimakiiribikoinie [Sujin] was the second child of Emperor Wakayamatonekohikoobibi [Kaika]. His mother was called Ikagashikome no Mikoto, the daughter of Ohesoki, the distant ancestor of the Mononobe Clan.
When the Emperor was 19 years old, he was pronounced Crown Prince. His character was clever, and from a young age he loved manly strategy. When he was grown, his knowledge was broad and plentiful, his character cautious and attentive, and he revered the gods of heaven and earth and set his heart on managing his heavenly charge.
60th year, summer, fourth month. Emperor Wakayamatonekohikoobibi died.
First year, spring, first month. On the 13th day, the crown prince became Emperor. The Empress was prounced Empress Dowager.
Establishment of the Empress
Second month. On the 16th day, Princess Mimaki became Empress. Previously, she had given birth to Emperor Ikumeiribioisachi [Suinin], Hikoisachi no Mikoto, Princess Kunikata no Mikoto, Princess Chichitsukuyamato no Mikoto, Yamatohiko no Mikoto, and Ikatsuruhiko no Mikoto.
His consort was the daughter of Arakawachi Tobe from the country of Kii, Princess Tootsuayumemakuwashi (by another version, the daughter of the Sukune of Oshiame Yasakafuruamairobe). She gave birth to Toyokiiribiko no Mikoto and Princess Toyosukiiri no Mikoto.
By his other consort, Princess Oshiama of Owari, Yasakairibiko no Mikoto, Princess Nunakiiri no Mikoto, and Princess Toichineiri no Mikoto were born. The year was 97 B.C.
Third year, autumn, ninth month. The capital was moved to Shiki, and the palace called Mizukaki Palace.
Fourth year, winter, tenth month. On the 23rd day, the Emperor pronounced, “When our ancestors, the many Emperors before, rose to their office, was it for themselves alone? It was to suppress the wild people, and maintain the realm under heaven. Therefore they could, from era to era, expand their profound achievements, and in their time cause their extreme virtue to flow outwards. Now, we have received their great fortune, and love and nourish the people. How could we follow in the footsteps of our imperial ancestors but by forever keeping the eternal throne? You numberless royal ministers, exhausting your loyalty, should you not together bring peace to the the realm?
Worship of Amaterasu and Okunitama
Fifth year. There was a great plague in the country, and many denizens died, over half.
Sixth year. The people wandered, and dissenters appeared. This vigor was difficult to suppress with virtue. The Emperor, from early in the morning until late at night, appeased the gods of heaven and earth, requesting punishment. Previously, the two gods, the great goddess Amaterasu and Yamato Okunitama were venerated within the Emperor’s palace, however because of these uprisings, it was not safe to dwell together with them. Therefore Princess Toyosukuiri no Mikoto was charged to venerate the great goddess Amaterasu in the village of Kasanui in Yamato, thereby the Himoroki of Shiki was established. Himoroki is read hi-mo-ri-ki, 比も品岐.
Also worship of Yamato Okunitama was charged to Princess Nunakiiri no Mikoto, however, Princess Nunakiiri no Mikoto’s hair was falling out and her body emaciated, so she could not perform the worship.
The Emperor Performs Divination
Seventh year, spring, second month. On the 15th day, the Emperor pronounced, “Of old, our imperial ancestors began a vast foundation, and ever after this afterwards holy endeavor exceeded the heights, and the king’s civilization spread and flourished. However, now our generation has suffered a number of calamities. Do we not fear that the court’s administration is not good, and the gods of heaven and earth have found fault with us? Maybe we should make the sacred tortoise burn to tell us the reason.
Then the Emperor went to Kamuasadibara and assembled the 80,000 gods, and asked them using divination.
Then the gods made it clear through Princess Kamiyamatototobimomoso no Mikoto, who said, “The Emperor asks why his superb country is not at peace? If you make offering to us, certainly the country will be naturally pacified.”
The Emperor asked him, “What god teaches me this?”
The god replied, “I am one of the gods who dwells in the borderlands of country Yamato, called the god Omononushi.”
The Emperor received the god’s words and performed the divination as instructed, however there was no effect. Then the Emperor bathed himself and cleaned out the interior of the palace and prayed, saying, “Are my rituals to the gods not yet enough? Why are they not received? Teach me this reason in a dream, how to make divine favor.”
The Emperor's Dream
That night, one aristocrat appeared in a dream, and faced the palace door, and called himself the god Omononushi, saying, “The Emperor has no need to worry. The unrest within the country was my design. If my child Otataneko makes worship to me, accordingly the realm will be pacified. Also the countries abroad will surrender on their own.”
Autumn, eighth month. On the seventh day, Princess Yamatoto Hayakamuasajiharamakuwashi, the ancestor of the Omi of Hozumi Omikuchi no Sukune, and the Omi no Kimi of Ise all had the same dream and said, “Last night in our dream was one aristocrat. He said, ‘Otataneko no Mikoto was made to worship he god Omononushi as his caretaker, and if you make Ichishi no Nagaochi worship Yamato Okunitama as his caretaker, certainly the realm under heaven will be greatly pacified.’”
The Emperor heard this dream and was greatly pleased, and proclaimed throughout the realm seeking Otataneko, and accordingly in Chinu no Agata, in the village of Sue, he was found and made to worship.
The Emperor then favorably reported to Kamuasajibara, and assembled the myriad princes, ministers, and 80 be, and asked Otataneko, “Whose child are you?”
He replied, “ My father is the great god Omononushi, and my mother is Princess Ikutamayori, the daughter of Suetsumimi.” By another verstion, the daughter of Kushihikataamahika Tatakechinutsumi.
The Emperor said, “We will prosper.” Then he divined that it would be lucky to make the ancestor of the Mononobe Muraji, Ikagashikoo, act as chief caretaker of the god, and also divined that it would be unlucky to worship other gods.
Eleventh month. On the 13th day, the Emperor ordered Ikagashikoo, with the sacred objects made by the hands of the 80 Mononobe, and accordingly Otataneko was made to venerate the great god Omononushi as his caretaker, and Nagaochi was made to venerate Yamato Okunitama as his caretaker.
And afterwards the divination of the veneration to other gods was made, with the result, “good.” Therefore the other 80,000 myriad gods were venerated separately, then established the shrine to the heavenly gods, and to the earthly gods, and their respective places. In this the plague was remedied, and within the country it gradually became calm, and the five grains were harvested, and the people had a bountiful harvest.
Ancestor of the Kimi of Miwa
Eighth year, summer, fourth month. On the 16th day, a person from the village of Takahashi known as Ikuhi was made the Okami Sakabito [wine master]. Sakabito is read sa-ka-bi-to, 佐介弭苔.
Winter, twelfth month. On the 20th day. The Emperor had Otataneko venerate Okami. On that day, Ikuhi himself presented sacred alcohol to the Emperor. Then the Emperor sang,
“blah blah blah.”
He sang like this, and they had a banquet at the sacred palace. Then at the end of the banquet, the many great men sang,
“blah blah blah.”
Then the Emperor answered, singing,
“blah blah blah.”
Then he opened the door to the sacred palace and went inside. The man called Otataneko was the first ancestor of the Kimi of Miwa.
Veneration of Sumisaka and Osaka
Ninth year, spring, third month. On the 15th day, the Emperor saw a sacred man in a dream, and he said, “With eight shields, and eight halberds, make offering to the god Sumisaka, and with eight black shields and eight black halberds, make offering to the god Osaka.”
Fourth month. On the 16th day, according to the instructions in the dream, the gods Sumisaka and Osaka were venerated.
Dispatch of Ministers
Tenth year, autumn, seventh month. On the 24th day, the Emperor summoned the myriad ministers, saying, “The basis of the providing the way to the people is in teaching them civilization. Now rites have been performed to the gods of heaven and earth, and the disasters are all finished. However, in the far away wild men have not received the proper calendar. This is because they have not learned of the civilization of my rule. Such as this I will select of the myriad ministers and dispatch them in the four directions, and order them to know my statutes.”
Ninth month. On the ninth day, Obiko no Mikoto was dispatched to the north continent, Takenunakawawake to the eastern sea, Kibitsuhiko to the western road and Taniha no Chinushi no Mikoto to Tamba.
This caused him to proclaim, “If they do not receive instruction, lead soldiers and cut them down!” Accordingly they together received the seal of shogun. On the 27th day, Obiko no Mikoto proceeded to the top of the acclivity of Wani, and there was a girl who sang to him (one version says Obiko no Mikoto proceeded to Hirasaka in Yamashiro. At that time beside the road was a young girl, who sang to him)
“blah blah blah.”
One version says,
“blah2 blah2 blah2.”
Then Obiko no Mikoto thought it strange and asked her, “What are you talking about?”
She replied, “Just what I said; I’m just singing.” Then she sang the song again, and disappeared from view.
Interpretation of the Song
Obiko no Mikoto returned and reported this. Then the Emperor’s aunt Princess Yamato Totohimomoso no Mikoto, being intelligent and wise, could decipher the portent in the song. Knowing the song’s danger, she spoke to the Emperor, “It is a sign that Takehaniyasubiko is plotting treason! I hear, Takehaniyasubiko’s wife Princess Ata has secretly come here, to take the soil of Kaguyama in Yamato, and wrapped it in her scarf, praying, ‘This is the truth of the land of Yamato (monoshiro is read mo-no-shi-ro, 望能志呂) and then turned it upside-down’ – I know this thing. Certainly quickly make a plan, afterwards will be too late.”
Then, he called back the myriad shoguns and consulted with them. Shortly thereafter, Takehaniyasubiko and his wife Princess Ata had revolted and led a sudden attack against them. Each road division was taken, and both the husband from Yamashiro and the wife from Osaka invaded, and they wanted to overtake the imperial capital.
Therefore the Emperor dispatched Isaseribiko no Mikoto to attack Princess Ata’s force. Then blocking off Osaka he put them all to rout, killed Princess Ata, and executed the remaining soldiers.
Dispatch of Obiko against Haniyasubiko
Also the Emperor dispatched Obiko and the distant ancestor of the Omi of Wani Hikokunibuku towards Yamashiro to attack Haniyasubiko. They placed a sacred jar atop the acclivity of Takesuki in Wani, then led the soldiers and advanced to Mt. Nara and made camp. At that time the army commanders grouped together and flattened the grass and trees, so that mountain was called Mt. Nara. Flatten is read fu-mi-na-ra-su, 布瀰那羅須.
The proceeding from Mt. Nara they reached the Wakara river, and with Haniyasubiko they surrounded the river, and each challenged the other. Therefore people at that time named this river the Idomi. Now it is called the Izumi; this is a corruption.
Haniyasubiko looked upon them, and asked Hikokunibuku, saying, “Why have you led your army and come here?”
He replied, “You have gone against the way of heaven, and want to take the kingship. Therefore I have marshaled the soldiers of justice, and want to put you down – This is the order of the Emperor!” Then the two began to fight. Takehaniyasubiko first shot at Hikokunibuku, but missed. Then Hikokunibuku shot Haniyasubiko in the chest and killed him.
The other soldiers were filled with fear and fled, and they were routed to the north of the river and there the majority executed, and the corpses and bones overflowed. Therefore this place is called Hafurisono.
Also, the soldiers fled in fear, and their feces leaked from their pants, so they removed their armor and fled. But knowing they could not escape, they lowered their heads and said, “Wagi” [please spare me my life]. Therefore, people in those times called the place where they shed their armor, Kawara, and where they voided in their pants, Kusobakama – now this is called Kusuba, this is a corruption. And the place where they sued for clemency, this is called Nomu. Nomu is read no-mu, 迺務.
Death of Princess Yamato Totohimomoso no Mikoto
After this, Princess Yamato Totohimomoso no Mikoto became the wife of the god Omononushi. However, this god always failed to appear in the day, and only came around at night.
Princess Yamato Totohimomoso no Mikoto said to her husband, “You always are not seen in the day, so I cannot see your face clearly. I beg you to stay a while, for this morning I want to see your beautiful awesomeness.”
Okami replied, “I understand your reason. Tomorrow I will go into your comb case, but I ask that you do not be shocked at my form.”
Therefore Princess Yamato Toto no Mikoto secretly thought this curious, and waited until morning, and looked in her comb case, and there was a beautiful small snake, whose length was like the thread from a piece of clothing. At this she was shocked and screamed.
Then Okami was ashamed, and chanced into a human form, then admonished his wife, saying, “You had no patience, and have shamed me. Now I will return and shame you!” then he stepped into the great sky, and climbed up to Mt. Mimoro.
So Princess Yamato Toto no Mikoto looked up, and while in regret suddenly sat down. Sit down is read tsukiu, 菟岐于. Therefore a chopstick stabbed her in the vagina and she died. She was buried in Ochi. Therefore people at that time attached the name “Hashihaka” to that grave. This grave was made by humans in the daytime, any by gods at night. It was made by stone from Mt. Osaka. From the mountain to the grave, to move the stone people stood in a chain and passed it hand to hand. At that time they sang,
“blah blah blah.”
Dispatch of the Shoguns
Winter, Tenth month On the first day, the Emperor proclaimed to the myriad ministers, “Now, the traitors have been executed. The problems of the court have been resolved. However, the people in the areas outside of our control continue to make noise and are not checked. Now, I will dispatch shoguns in the four directions. On the 22nd day, the shoguns were all dispatched.
11th year, summer, fourth month. On the 28th day, the four shoguns reported the pacification of the rebels. In this year, many people of different tribes came, and the country was stable.
First Survey of Citizens and Levy of Taxes
12th year, spring, third month. On the 11th day, the Emperor proclaimed, “We, upon first receiving the heavenly rank, obtained, kept, and worshiped the court, but some in some places the brightness is covered, and virtue has not been able to appease. Because of this Yin and Yang are mistaken, cold and hot lacking order, many plagues occur, and the people suffer natural disasters. However now we atone for sins, correct mistakes, revere the gods of heaven and earth, and spread civilization, therefore the wild peoples are soothed, the army was raised and those out of order smitten. No enterprise disregards the court, no people hide from the world, civilization flows outward, and the masses enjoy their endeavors. Foreign tribes come with interpreters, and those overseas offer allegiance. At this time, we should further investigate the citizens, and know the circumstances of young and old, and teach them grades of rank and forced labor.”
Autumn, ninth month. On the 16th day, the first survey of the citizens began, and they were given their assignments. By this order, the men were assigned Yuhazu tax, and the women Tanasue tax.
By this the gods of heaven earth were together [with the people] in a state of harmony, and the wind and rain were in order, and the one hundred grains came to fruition, and to the households and their people distributed sufficiently, and there was great peace under heaven. Therefore the Emperor was praised as Hatsukunishira Susumera Mikoto [the first Emperor].
Establishment of an Heir
17th year, autumn, seventh month. On the first day, the Emperor proclaimed, “The realm has need of boats. Now the people of the beaches have no boats, and suffer of it. Now I order the myriad countries, make boats!”
Winter, 10th month. They started building boats.
48th year, spring, first month. On the tenth day, the Emperor ordered Toyoki no Mikoto and Ikume no Mikoto, saying, “You two excel in kindness, and I don’t know who should be my successor. Each of you should have a dream, and I will interpret it.”
The two princes, according to the order, washed themselves and prayed, and each had a dream.
At dawn, the older brother Toyoki no Mikoto reported his dream to the emperor, “I naturally ascended to the peak of Mt. Mimoro, and looked to the east, then eight times brandished my spear, and eight times thrust with my sword.”
The younger brother Ikume no Mikoto reported his dream, saying, “I naturally ascended to the peak of Mt. Mimoro, and roped off the four directions, and chased off the sparrows that were eating the grain.” Accordingly the Emperor put the dreams together, and ordered the two saying, “The older brother faced only the east, so he will conquer the eastern countries. The younger brother attended to all four directions, so he should succeed to my rank.”
Fourth month. On the 19th day, Ikume no mikoto was made Crown Prince. Toyoki no Mikoto was ordered to subdue the east. He was the first ancestor of the Kimi of Kamitsuke and Shimotsuke.
Collection of the Treasure of Takehinateru no Mikoto
60th year, autumn, seventh month. On the 14th day, the Emperor ordered the myriad ministers, saying, “The divine treasure that Takehinateru no Mikoto (by one version Takehinatori no Mikoto, also called, Amahinatoru) brought down from heaven is stored in the Shrine in Izumo. I want to see it.” Accordingly he dispatched the distant ancestor of the of the Yatabe no Miyatsuko Takemorosumi, by one version, Omorosumi to get them.
At that time, the distant ancestor of the Omi of Izumo Izumofurune, the owner of the divine treasure, had gone to Tsukushi and couldn’t be met. His younger brother Iirine, according to the Emperor’s order had his younger brother Umashikarahisa and child Ukazukune present them.
When Izumofurune came back from Tsukushi, he heard the divine treasure had been presented to the court, blamed his brother Iirine, saying, “You should have waited a few days. What were you afriad of, that you surrendered the divine treasure so easily?”
Death of the Brothers
Already months and years had passed, but his anger and resentment festered, and he intended to kill his younger brother. He continued to deceive his younger brother, saying, “In the pool of Yamuya there is a lot of seaweed growing around this time, I want to go see it with you.” Accordingly he accompanied his brother there.
Previously, the older brother secretly made a wooden sword whose shape was that of a real sword. He carried that sword himself, and his brother a real sword. Together they arrived at the head of the pool, and the older brother said to the younger, “The pool water is clean and cool, I want to bathe together.” The younger brother did as his brother said, and loosing his sword, placed it on the side of the pool and bathed in the water. Then the older brother got out first, and took his brother’s real sword as his own. Afterwards his younger brother was shocked and took the older brother’s wooden sword, and they exchanged blows. The younger brother could not draw the wooden sword, and the older brother struck him and killed him. Therefore at that time people sang,
“blah blah blah.”
Then Umashikarahisa and Ukazukune attended on the court, and reported this affair. Therefore Kibitsuhiko and Takenunakawawake were dispatched and killed Izumofurune. Therefore, the Omi of Izumo, out of dread of this affair, did not worship the great god for a time.
At that time, a man of Hikami in Tamba, called Hikatobe, said to the Crown Prince Ikume no Mikoto, “My child is an infant, however he says on his own,
"A sunken stone like a jewel in the water weeds. The people of Izumo worship it, a truly beautiful mirror. Swinging like a feather, the beautiful god, in the depths is the treasure’s master. The honorable soul swimming in the water of the mountain river, a still and beautiful god, in the depths the master of the treasure.” Mo is read mo, 毛.
This are not the words of a small child, so perhaps he has been commissioned to say them.” The crown prince reported this to the Emperor, and the Emperor ordered them to be worshiped.
Death of the Emperor
62nd year, autumn, seventh month. On the second day, the Emperor proclaimed, “Agriculture is the basis of the realm, and the people rely on it for their lives. Now there is a water shortage in Hanita, in Sayama in Kawachi, so the people there are neglecting their produce. Dig a lot of reservoirs, and make the people work.”
Winter, 10th month. The reservoir of Yosami was made.
11th month. The reservoirs of Karisaka and Sakaori were made. By one version, the Emperor lived in Kuwama Palace and had three reservoirs made.
