Not a day goes by that I do not think of him. So, I want to catch white cranes and keep them at the lake near the tomb. Therefore looking at these birds, I want to give comfort to my feelings of longing.” Then he ordered the many countries to present him with white cranes.
Intercalary 11th month. On the fourth day, the country of Koshi presented four white cranes. The messenger who brought them once stayed near Ujigawa. At that time Prince Ashikaminokamamiwake saw the white cranes and asked, “Where are you taking the white cranes?” The man from Koshi said, “The Emperor loved the prince his father and wants to keep them, so we are offering them up to him.”
Then Prince Kamamiwake said to the man from Koshi, “Even a white crane turns black when roasted.” Then by force he stole the white cranes and departed. Then the man from Koshi went and reported this. The Emperor thought by this the evil Prince Kamawake had done insult to the previous ruler and dispatched soldiers and had him put to death. Prince Kamamiwake was the Emperor’s younger step-brother by a different mother. At that time people said, “His father was heaven, and his older brother lord. In this he insulted heaven and defied his lord, how can he escape execution?” This year was 192.

The Empress and the public officials stayed, but accompanying him were two or three ministers and several hundred bureaucrats, and they traveled lightly. They arrived in the country of Kii and stayed in Tokurotsu palace. At that time, the Kumaso revolted and would not pay imperial tribute. The Emperor sought to attack the Kumaso, and left Tokorotsu, and went by boat to Anato. That day, a messenger was sent to Tsunuga and the Empress was ordered, “Now leave port and meet me at Anato.”
Summer, sixth month. On the tenth day, the Emperor stayed at the port of Toyura. The Empress in accordance left Tsunuga and arrived in Nutanominato, and ate aboard the ship. The Emperor Reaches Tsukushi

Eighth year, spring, first month. On the fourth day, the Emperor visited Tsukushi. At that time, the ancestor of the Agatanushi of Oka, called Wani, heard the Emperor’s procession and uprooted a 500-branched Sakaki tree, and stood it on the bow of a nine-hiro ship, and from it’s upper branches hung a silver mirror, and from its middle branches a ten-span sword, and from its lower branches a Yasaka jewel, and met him at the harbor of Suwa no Saba, and offered up a territory rich in salt and fish. Then he said, “From Anato to the great crossing of Mukatsuno is the eastern gate, and to the great crossing of Nagoya the western gate, Motori island and Ahe island are the honorable basket, and Shiba island the honorable pot, (minahe is read mi-na-he, 弥那陪) and the Sakami sea is the Salt-land.”
In this manner he guided them along the sea route, and they went around Yamaka no Saki into Oka no Ura. When the reached the straights of Oka no Ura, the ships could no longer go forward. Then he asked Wani, saying, “I hear you, Wani, have come forth with a pure heart. Why then can the ships not proceed?” Wani answered him, saying, “The reason the ships cannot go forward is not because of my sin. There is in the mouth of this harbor two gods male and female, the male is called Okuranushi and the female is called Tsuburahime. Certainly this is the will of these gods.”
The Emperor then prayed, and the captain, a man Ibihiko of Uda in Yamato, was made priest and made to worship them. Then the ships could proceed. The Empress, on a separate ship, came to meet him from Kuki no Umi. Kuki is read ku-ki, 久岐. However the tide was out and they could not proceed.
Then Wani returned, and met the Empress there. On seeing the ship unable to proceed, he worried, and made a fish lake and bird lake, and completely collected fish and birds. The Empress saw the fish and birds and amused herself with them, and her heart was put at east, and going along with the tide they stayed at the port of Oka.
Also the ancestor of the Itonoagatanushi of Tsukushi Itote heard the Emperor was coming, and uprooted a 500 branch Sakaki tree, and set it at the bow of his ship, and from its upper branches hung a Yasaka jewel, and from its middle branches a silver mirror, and from its lower branches a ten-span sword, and came to meet the Emperor at Anato at Hikoshima, and presented them. When he did that he said, “I present these things to the Emperor, for like the bend in a Yasaka jewel he has bent the heavens into line, and like a silver mirror he clearly looks upon the mountains, rivers, seas, and fields, and holding a ten-span sword he has pacified the realm under heaven.”
The Emperor praised Itote saying, “Isoshi!” Therefore at this time Itote’s homeland was given the name, Iso country. Now it is called Itotsu, this is a corruption. On the 21st day, the Emperor arrived in Nagaagata and stayed in Kashihi palace.

Divine Instruction to Conquer Korea

Autumn, ninth month. On the fifth day, the myriad ministers were to conference on attacking the Kumaso. At that time the gods, using the Empress, spoke, saying “Why does the Emperor worry about the insubordination of the Kumaso? It is a country whose back meat is empty, why call up soldiers and attack it? More than this county there is a jewel-country、for example, like the drawn eyebrow of a lady, and it faces the ports of this country (mayobiki is read ma-yo-bi-ki, 麻用弭枳. Its eye burns of gold, silver, and bright fabrics, and there are much of these in this country. It is called the country of Takubusuma Shiraki. If you can venerate me, without bloodying your sword, this country will surrender all on its own. Accordingly the Kumaso will also surrender. In this veneration, offer up the Emperor’s ship and also the field presented by Anatonoataihomutachi called Ota as an offering.”
The Emperor heard these words of the gods, and doubted them. So he climbed to the top of a high hill, and looked over the great sea far away, and in the darkness far-off he could not see a country. Then the Emperor replied to the gods, saying, “I have looked all around, and there is no country, only sea. Why is there a great country when looking from the sky? What gods trick and deceive me? My imperial ancestors all seriously venerated the gods of heaven and earth, what gods now remain?”
At that time the gods again speaking through the Empress said, “Like a shadow in the water, from heaven looking down there is a country. Why do you say there is no country? Do you doubt my words? That you king cannot believe it said like this, therefore you will not believe it, and you will not get this country. Only now the Empress is pregnant, and that child will take it.” However the Emperor further disbelieved these words, and strongly struck at the Kumaso, but could not get victory and returned.

Death of the Emperor

Ninth year, spring, second month. On the fifth day, the Emperor fell sick and died the next day. He was 52 years old, and it is thought that because he did not heed the words of the gods he died early. It is also said that when fighting the Kumaso, he was hit with an arrow and died. Thereby the empress and the Prime Minister Takeshiuchi no Sukune covered up his death, and did not let it be known in the realm.
Thereby the Empress proclaimed to the prime minister as well as Nakatomi no Ikatsu no Muraji, Omiwa no Otomonushi no Kimi, Mononobe no Ikui no Muraji, and Otomo no Takemotsu no Muraji, “Now the realm does not know of the Emperor’s death. If the people know, they will slack off!” Then these four ministers and the public officials guarded up the interior of the palace, and secretly took care of the Emperor’s corpse, depositing it with Takeshiuchi no Sukune, and he took the sea route and moved it to Anato, and did the temporary burial at Toyura palace, and made the no fires for the temporary burial. This is read ho-na-shi-a-ga-ri. On the 22nd day, the prime minister Takeshiuchi no Sukune returned from Anato alone and returned to service of the Empress. The same year. because of Silla’s actions, they could not have the Emperor’s funeral.
